The Bukom Boxing Arena has witnessed many legendary nights, but few felt as much like a “passing of the torch” as this past Friday. In a night dubbed “The Rise Continues,” the local favourite, Theophilus “Theo Lopez” Allotey, proved that he isn’t just a prospect; he is a powerhouse.

Entering the ring against Namibia’s Jonas Erastus, Allotey knew the stakes were high. The vacant WBA Africa Super Flyweight Title was on the line, and with it, a fast-track ticket into the world rankings.

The drama started early. In the opening rounds, a clash of heads left Allotey with a significant cut over his right eye. For many young fighters, the sight of their own blood can lead to panic. For Allotey, it was a wake-up call. Showing a level of veteran composure that belied his 23 years, he adjusted his guard and began to break Erastus down methodically.

By the middle rounds, the momentum had shifted entirely. Allotey’s hand speed and precision began to overwhelm the Namibian. While Erastus showed incredible heart, the sheer volume of power shots coming from the Ghanaian was too much to withstand.

In the 7th round, sensing his opponent was fading, Allotey unleashed a flurry of combinations that forced veteran referee Roger Barnor to step in and stop the contest. The arena erupted as Allotey was crowned the new champion, securing his fifth professional title in record time.

The presence of Ghanaian sporting icons amplified the atmosphere. Icons like Azumah Nelson, Joshua Clottey, and Asamoah Gyan were seen ringside, nodding in approval as the next generation of Ghanaian excellence took centre stage. Organised by Sharaf Mahama’s Legacy Rise Sports, the event was a masterclass in sports promotion and a reminder that boxing remains the heartbeat of Accra.

With the WBA Africa belt now firmly around his waist, the path toward a world title is becoming clear. If Allotey can fight through adversity as he did on Friday, the flyweight division worldwide has officially been put on notice.

The “Theo Lopez” era hasn’t just begun—it’s accelerating.
